Environmental Hazards Essay An environmental hazard is a threat posed by the natural or built environment to humans and the things that are valued in human society. An environmental hazard becomes a disaster when the threat is realized and causes significant human loss.

Natural hazards are elements of circumstances in the natural environment that have the potential to cause harm to people or property or both. These are the phenomena that pose a threat to people, structures or economic assests and which may cause a disaster. They can be man made or naturally occurring in our environment.

An open dump is abandoned piles of household garbage, bags of yard waste, appliances, old barrels, used tires, and demolition debris can threaten the health of wildlife, the environment, and humans. They can cause such health, environmental, and safety.They can cause such health, environmental, and safety issues as fires or explosions, the inhalation of toxic gases, injuries to children playing in or around the dumpsites (I have personal experience of cutting my foot on broken glass as a child playing in an open dump), diseases carried by flies, rodents and mosquitos, and other hazards.An environmental hazard poses a threat to not only the surrounding environment, but potentially to the health of people living in that area. An environmental hazard can be anything from toxic waste production, air pollution, garbage disposal to pesticide poisons.


Environmental pollution and health hazards caused by it, dates back to the history and progress of the human civilization. Earlier, pollutants in the form of gases, smoke, domestic wastes etc have given way to a wide variety of industrial waste ranging from toxic gases and heavy metallic oxides to a variety of man made compounds.Landslides and other mass movements are severe environmental hazards in Himalayas. Individual landslides are generally not so spectacular or costly as earthquakes, major floods, volcanoes etc., yet they are more widespread, and over the years may cause more loss than any other geological hazard.

This report is hardly exhaustive, yet it does cover some of the daily elements of environmental hazards. The surprising element of this report is the lack of general knowledge of these hazards by the general public. I have covered five areas that can be seen as common place events.
